Female Hair Loss
Look around you next time your out and about. Count how many men you see walking about with no hair
or thinning hair. How many do you get? Quite a few I would expect. Now do the same for a
woman. How many bald women do you see? I think you'd be hard pushed to find any. This is why it
can be more troubling for a woman to lose her hair. Men are expected to go bald. Women aren't.
Female hair loss can be extremely rare.
Female hair loss causes can be similar to those of a man and I don't think a woman should suffer hair
loss. It's only something men are supposed to go through in my opinion. But it happens and I'm glad
there are treatments out there for them.
Women can suffer hair loss in a number of ways I'm afraid to say. Firstly, some women can suffer
from androgenic alopecia or male pattern baldness. Male pattern baldness is rare but it can happen. Other causes of
female hairloss are stress, anxiety, chemical processing, oral contraception, hormonal imbalance, pregnancy,
menopause PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) and traction alopecia. Quite a list I know.
Let's look at hormonal imbalance as this is the most common cause of female hairloss. We've already
mentioned that women can suffer from androgenic hairloss (too much male hormone present) but women can also suffer
from estrogenic baldness (too little female hormone present).
What can cause this hormonal imbalance? Most commonly oral contraceptives, PCOS, menopause and pregnancy (post
natal stages) can. All of these directly affect the hormone balance within a womans body and can lead to partial or
dramatic thinning or loss of hair. If you experience hair loss I can't stress enough how important it is to contact
your doctor.
Women who have just given birth can also expect some loss of hair. This is simply due to the fact that during
pregnancy your estrogen levels are way higher than normal (hence the thicker hair) but afterwards they drop
considerably which can cause temporary loss of hair.
Women under an incredible amount of stress can suffer from thinning hair.
I know women won't want to hear this but chemical treatments can be a cause of hair loss and is often
overlooked. Women who constantly treat their hair with chemicals, be it hair dye or something else, are putting
themselves at a higher risk than others.Applying lots of heat to your hair will carry the same
consequences. Over time it can damage the hair. Fortunately, it is easy to reverse. All you have to do is
stop abusing your hair.
Another thing women need to be wary of is Traction Alopecia. There are a lot of women out there who tie their
hair in pony-tails or knots. Some tie their hair so tight it's the next best thing to a face-lift. Sometimes it
looks like they're constantly smiling. No so. This kind of pressure on the hair and pull it out at the
roots. Never good. And ladies - don't think that because your eyebrows grow back everytime you pluck them that the
same will apply to your scalp hair. Not so.
The topical treatments available for women suffering from hairloss are Rogaine for women, saw palemtto based
natural treatments and aromatherapy treatments (which are always popular). Women, of course, who have suffered long
term and devastating hairloss can always use a hair replacement system to regain their confidence and appearance
but this will always be a last resort. Don't forget - a hair system is just
the updated terminology for a Wig, although to be fair, they are a lot more advanced.
